Problem

Three 1.0 mol1.0\,\text{mol} samples of the same pure substance are held at atmospheric pressure. Sample X is a block of solid at 0 ∘C0\,^{\circ}\text{C}, sample Y is the liquid phase at 0 ∘C0\,^{\circ}\text{C}, and sample Z is the vapor phase at 0 ∘C0\,^{\circ}\text{C}. (a) Rank the entropy of the three samples from lowest to highest. (b) Explain your reasoning in terms of microscopic molecular arrangement and energy dispersal. (c) The solid and liquid are both at the melting temperature. Describe what happens to the entropy of the substance during the phase transition from X to Y and explain why this change occurs even though the temperature remains constant.
