Problem

A laboratory thermometer uses alcohol as the thermometric liquid. The length of the alcohol column is l0=1.4 cml_0=1.4\,\text{cm} at 0 ∘C0\,^{\circ}\text{C} and l50=5.8 cml_{50}=5.8\,\text{cm} at 50 ∘C50\,^{\circ}\text{C}. When the thermometer is immersed in an unknown liquid, the alcohol column length becomes 4.0 cm4.0\,\text{cm}. Assuming the scale between the fixed points is linear, (i) determine the temperature of the unknown liquid, (ii) find by how many degrees the reading would change if the apparent coefficient of expansion of alcohol were 2%2\% larger than assumed.
