Problem

The reaction 2 NO₂(g) ⇌ N₂O₄(g) has Kp = 0.40 at 298 K. A container at this temperature is initially at equilibrium. The volume of the container is then rapidly reduced to one-half of its original value, causing all partial pressures to double instantaneously. Immediately after the compression, determine the sign of ΔG and indicate whether the net reaction will proceed in the forward or reverse direction as the mixture returns to equilibrium.
