Problem

A simple series circuit consists of a 1.5 V battery, an ideal conducting wire, and a single light-emitting diode (LED) connected in a closed loop. The physical layout is described verbally as follows: starting at the positive terminal of the battery, a straight wire leads to the anode of the LED; the cathode of the LED connects to another straight wire that returns to the negative terminal of the battery. Assume all components are ideal unless otherwise noted. (a) Draw the schematic symbol for this circuit and clearly indicate the direction of the conventional current with an arrow on every straight section of wire. (b) On the same schematic, use a different color or dashed line to indicate the direction that electrons actually drift through the circuit. (c) Explain, in words, why the conventional current arrows you drew in part (a) point from the positive terminal of the battery toward the negative terminal even though electrons move in the opposite direction. Your explanation should explicitly reference the historical definition of current and how that convention is applied on schematic diagrams.
