Problem

One end of a uniform brass rod of length 20 cm20\,\text{cm} and cross-sectional area 10 cm210\,\text{cm}^2 is kept at 100∘C100^\circ\text{C}. Its other end is in perfect thermal contact with another rod of identical cross-sectional area and length 10 cm10\,\text{cm}. The free end of the second rod is kept in melting ice. At steady state, 360 g360\,\text{g} of ice melts per hour. Calculate the thermal conductivity of the second rod, given that the thermal conductivity of brass is 0.25 cal s−1cm−1 ∘C−10.25\,\text{cal s}^{-1}\text{cm}^{-1}\,{}^\circ\text{C}^{-1} and L=80 cal g−1L=80\,\text{cal g}^{-1}.
