Problem

A block of mass 2 kg is placed on a rough plane that is inclined at 30∘30^{\circ} to the horizontal. It is connected by a light, inextensible string that passes over a smooth pulley at the top of the plane to a second block of mass 4 kg hanging vertically. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the 2 kg block and the plane is 0.20. Take g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-2}. (i) Calculate the magnitude and direction of the acceleration of the system after release. (ii) Find the tension in the string while the motion takes place. (iii) How much time will elapse before the 4 kg block has descended 1.5 m?
