Problem

A car starts from rest, moves along a straight road and follows the schedule given below: • It accelerates uniformly for 5 s5\,\text{s}. • It then travels with the speed reached for the next 10 s10\,\text{s}. • Finally it comes to rest with uniform retardation in 5 s5\,\text{s}. The magnitude of acceleration during the first stage is 2 m s−22\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}. Answer the following: (i) Draw a neat velocity–time graph for the entire motion, marking all important values on both axes. (ii) Calculate the maximum speed attained by the car. (iii) Determine the displacement covered in each of the three stages separately. (iv) Find the total distance travelled and the average speed for the whole journey.
