Problem
Two straight copper wires OA and OB, each of length 0.30m, originate from the same point O and lie in the same horizontal plane, making an angle of 10∘ with each other. A steady current of 20A flows from O towards A and from O towards B in the respective wires.
(i) Show that the perpendicular distance between the mid-points of the two wires may be taken as d=Lsin(2θ), where L is the length of each wire and θ is the angle between them. Calculate d for the given data.
(ii) Treating the two wires as effectively parallel conductors separated by the distance found in part (i), determine the magnitude of the force acting on each wire due to the other.
(iii) State whether the interaction obtained in part (ii) is attractive or repulsive and justify your answer.
