Problem

A thin square metal plate of area 0.040 m20.040\,\text{m}^2 is completely immersed in oil of density 800 kg m−3800\,\text{kg m}^{-3} with the centre of the plate 2.0 m below the free surface of the oil. (a) Calculate the fluid force on the plate when it is kept vertical. (b) Without doing a fresh calculation, state and justify the value of the force when the same plate is kept horizontal at the same depth. (c) The plate is now held at the same depth but makes an angle of 30∘30^{\circ} with the horizontal. Determine the force on the plate and comment on your result in the light of the nature of fluid pressure.
