Problem

A parallel-plate capacitor of capacitance 10 μF10\,\mu\text{F} is charged to a potential difference of 200 V200\,\text{V} and then disconnected from the source. (i) State three equivalent mathematical expressions for the electrostatic energy stored in a charged capacitor. (ii) Calculate the energy initially stored in the capacitor. (iii) The plates are now slowly pulled apart so that the capacitance becomes exactly one-half of its original value while no charge can leak away. Determine the new potential difference across the plates and the new energy stored. Compare the final energy with the initial energy and briefly comment on the physical reason for any difference observed.
