Problem

Two very long, straight conductors are parallel to one another and separated by a distance dd. One conductor carries a current of 10 A and the other carries a current of 15 A in the opposite direction. (a) The magnitude of the magnetic force per unit length between the two conductors is required to be 3.0×10−4 N m−13.0\times10^{-4}\,\text{N\,m}^{-1}. Determine the separation dd that achieves this requirement. (b) If both currents are simultaneously doubled while the separation found in part (a) is maintained, compute the new magnitude of the force per unit length. (c) Explain, without additional calculation, how the result of part (b) illustrates the general dependence of the force on current and separation for two parallel conductors.
