Problem

Two taxi companies operate on the same route. Company P charges Rs 30 as boarding fare and Rs 5 per kilometre travelled. Company Q charges no boarding fare but Rs 8 per kilometre. Let xx be the distance travelled (in km) and yy the fare (in rupees). (i) Form the linear equations in xx and yy for the fares of Company P and Company Q. (ii) Draw the graphs of both equations on the same axes. (iii) From the graph, determine (a) the distance at which both companies charge the same fare, and (b) the fare charged by Company P for a 12 km trip (estimate if necessary).
