Problem

Two uniform copper wires X and Y are to be compared. (i) Wire X is 2.0 m2.0\,\text{m} long and has a cross-sectional area of 1.0 mm21.0\,\text{mm}^2. Given the resistivity of copper ρ=1.7×10−8 Ω m\rho = 1.7 \times 10^{-8}\,\Omega\,\text{m}, calculate the resistance of wire X. (ii) Wire Y is made of the same material. It is 1.0 m1.0\,\text{m} long and has a diameter of 2.0 mm2.0\,\text{mm}. Calculate the resistance of wire Y. (iii) Compare the resistivities of wires X and Y and explain your observation briefly.
