Problem

A horizontal spring has a force constant of 150 N m−1150\,\text{N\,m}^{-1}. The spring is stretched by 8.0 cm8.0\,\text{cm} and then released. (a) Calculate the elastic potential energy stored in the spring at this extension. (b) If the same spring is to store four times the energy found in part (a), determine the extension required. (Assume the spring still obeys Hooke’s law.) (c) Instead of using the original spring, a stiffer spring of force constant 300 N m−1300\,\text{N\,m}^{-1} is stretched by the extension calculated in part (a). By what factor does the energy stored in the stiffer spring differ from that in part (a)?
