Problem

During use, the live conductor inside a metal-bodied washing machine becomes loose and touches the metallic casing. (i) Trace the sequence of events that will occur immediately after the live conductor contacts the casing, provided the appliance is correctly earthed and protected by a fuse. (ii) Using the ideas of potential difference and current path, prove that the earthing connection greatly reduces the risk of electric shock to a person who touches the casing at that moment. (iii) Suggest and explain two additional protective devices or practices (other than earthing) that further enhance safety in such domestic appliances.
