Problem

(a) Starting from the three standard equations of uniformly accelerated motion, derive algebraically the relation s=u+v2 ts = \dfrac{u + v}{2}\, t. (b) A runner crosses the 50 m50\,\text{m} mark on a straight track with a speed of 6.0 m s−16.0\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}. He maintains a uniform acceleration for the next 4.0 s4.0\,\text{s} and reaches the 150 m150\,\text{m} mark. (i) Calculate his acceleration during this interval. (ii) Determine his speed at the end of the 4.0 s4.0\,\text{s} interval. (iii) Re-check the value obtained in part (ii) by applying an appropriate velocity–time relation, and comment on the consistency of your answers.
