Problem
Three friends, Karan, Mita and Riju, performed different random experiments at the science exhibition.
• Karan tossed a particular coin 40 times and obtained heads 12 times.
• Mita rolled a numbered disk 50 times and it showed the number ‘7’ fourteen times.
• Riju spun a colour wheel 25 times and the pointer stopped at green 7 times.
Answer the following questions based on the information given above.
(i) Explain in one or two sentences what is meant by saying that an event is “more likely” than another event when their empirical probabilities are compared.
(ii) Using the data provided, calculate the empirical probability for each of the three events.
(iii) Arrange the three events in descending order of likelihood, clearly stating which event(s) (if any) are equally likely.
(iv) A visitor at the exhibition claims that the probability of Karan getting tails with the same coin is 1.3. Explain, with reference to the range property of probability, whether this claim is acceptable.
