Problem

Two heat engines, A and B, are arranged in series. Engine A absorbs 8.0×103 J8.0\times10^3\,\text{J} of heat from a source at 600 K600\,\text{K} and operates with an efficiency of 25%25\%. All the heat rejected by engine A serves as the input heat for engine B, which then rejects heat to a sink at 300 K300\,\text{K}. Engine B operates with an efficiency of 20%20\%. (i) Find the amount of heat transferred from engine A to engine B. (ii) Calculate the work produced by each engine separately. (iii) Determine the combined (overall) efficiency of the two–engine arrangement with respect to the initial heat supplied to engine A. (iv) Compute the maximum possible efficiency for any single engine working directly between 600 K600\,\text{K} and 300 K300\,\text{K} and compare it with the overall efficiency obtained in part (iii). Comment briefly on the result.
