Problem
A coil of resistance 20 Ω and inductance 0.30 H is connected in series with a capacitor of capacitance 80 μF to a 110 V (r.m.s) AC supply.
(i) For a frequency of 40 Hz, calculate the inductive reactance, capacitive reactance and impedance of the circuit.
(ii) For a frequency of 100 Hz, repeat the calculations in part (i).
(iii) Using the impedances obtained, determine the r.m.s current and the average power consumed by the circuit at each of the two frequencies.
(iv) Compare the power factors at the two frequencies and state which frequency allows the source to deliver more real power. Give a reason for your answer.
