Problem

Two long, straight, parallel wires are aligned with the z-axis. Wire 1 passes through the point x = −0.050 m, y = 0 and carries a current of 7.0 A directed into the page. Wire 2 passes through x = +0.050 m, y = 0 and carries a current of 7.0 A directed out of the page. A uniform magnetic field of unknown magnitude B₀ is applied in the +y direction throughout the region. Focus on points on the x-axis (y = 0) in the plane of the wires. (a) Write an expression for the y-component of the total magnetic field at an arbitrary point x on the x-axis, taking into account both wires and the uniform field. (b) Determine the value of B₀ for which there exists at least one point on the x-axis where the net magnetic field is exactly zero. (c) Calculate the x-coordinate(s) of all such point(s) when B₀ has the value found in part (b). (d) Suppose B₀ is increased by a small amount above the value found in part (b). Describe qualitatively how the position(s) of zero net field, if any, would shift along the x-axis.
