Problem

A network contains two ideal sources and four resistors connected as follows. • Battery E1=24 VE_1 = 24\,\text{V} is connected between nodes PP (positive) and QQ (negative). • Battery E2=12 VE_2 = 12\,\text{V} is connected between nodes RR (positive) and SS (negative), with node SS coinciding with node PP so that the two sources oppose each other in one loop. • Resistor R1=8 ΩR_1 = 8\,\Omega joins nodes PP and RR. • Resistor R2=5 ΩR_2 = 5\,\Omega joins nodes RR and QQ. • Resistor R3=10 ΩR_3 = 10\,\Omega joins nodes QQ and SS (that is, nodes QQ and PP). • Resistor R4=6 ΩR_4 = 6\,\Omega joins nodes PP and QQ directly. Assume clockwise branch currents I1I_1 in R1R_1, I2I_2 in R2R_2, and I3I_3 in R4R_4. (a) Write the two independent closed-path equations and the single junction equation required to solve for I1I_1, I2I_2, and I3I_3. (b) Solve these equations to obtain numerical values of the three currents. (c) For each source and each resistor, compute the power supplied or absorbed. Verify that the total power supplied equals the total power dissipated in the network.
