Problem

A building is surmounted by a vertical flag-pole of height 7 m. From a point P on level ground the angles of elevation of the top of the pole and of the roof of the building are 45° and 30° respectively. The point P, the foot of the building and the vertical line through the flag-pole lie in the same straight line. Solve the following. (i) If the distance of point P from the foot of the building is dd metres and the height of the building is hh metres, frame two equations in dd and hh based on the two observations. (ii) Hence find the height hh of the building correct to two decimal places. (iii) Determine the distance dd from point P to the foot of the building correct to two decimal places.
