Problem

Two aqueous reactions, R1 and R2, occur separately at the same temperature with identical initial reactant concentrations of 0.10 M0.10\,\text{M}. R1: rate = k1[A]2[B]k_1[A]^2[B] (overall order = 33) R2: rate = k2[A][B]0.5k_2[A][B]^{0.5} (overall order = 1.51.5) Both reactions involve the same reactants A and B but proceed by different mechanisms. (1) Part 1: For each reaction, predict the factor by which the initial rate will change if the concentration of A is doubled while B remains at 0.10 M0.10\,\text{M}. Show your calculations. (2) Part 2: Compare the sensitivities of R1 and R2 to changes in concentration of A. Explain the chemical significance of the difference. (3) Part 3: Under otherwise identical conditions, which reaction would you expect to reach 75%75\% completion first? Justify your answer using the overall reaction orders as evidence.
