Problem
A student investigates how connecting identical springs in different configurations affects the behavior of a mass–spring system. In each trial, the student uses two identical ideal springs that each have an unstretched length of 0.20 m. In Trial 1 the springs are connected end-to-end (in series) and a 1.0 kg block is hung from the free end. In Trial 2 the same springs are connected side-by-side (in parallel) and the same block is hung from the joined free ends.
Assume the block comes to rest in static equilibrium in both trials.
(a) Describe qualitatively how the total extension of the combined springs in Trial 1 compares with the total extension in Trial 2 when the block is at rest. Provide reasoning based on the way forces are transmitted through the springs in each configuration.
(b) Without using any explicit equations, explain why the effective stiffness experienced by the block is different in the two trials. In your explanation, refer to how the applied force is shared or accumulated within the springs for each configuration.
