Problem

(a) Define inductive reactance and capacitive reactance for an alternating current flowing through an inductor and a capacitor, respectively, and write their symbolic expressions. (b) State the condition for resonance in a series RLC circuit. Using this condition, show that the impedance of the circuit reduces to the resistance alone at resonance. (c) Sketch qualitatively the variation of the amplitude of current with frequency for a fixed R, L and C in a series RLC circuit. Explain why the current attains its maximum value at the resonant frequency.
