Problem
Two horses pull a loaded cart along a straight, level road for a distance of 2.0 km. Each horse exerts a constant forward force of 600 N on the cart. Resistive forces (rolling friction and air resistance) oppose the motion with a total constant force of 450 N. The mass of the cart together with its load is 500 kg. The cart starts from rest.
(i) Calculate the total work done by the horses during the 2.0 km journey.
(ii) Calculate the work done against the resistive forces over the same distance.
(iii) Determine the net work done on the cart.
(iv) Assuming all the net work converts into kinetic energy, find the speed of the cart at the end of the journey.
