Problem

One end of a smooth wooden board is raised so that the board makes an angle 37∘37^{\circ} with the horizontal. The lower end of the board is exactly level with the edge of a horizontal table that is 1.0 m1.0\,\text{m} high above the floor. A small block is released from rest at the upper end of the board of length 2.0 m2.0\,\text{m} and allowed to slide down the board, leave the table edge and fall freely to the floor. (i) Calculate the time taken by the block to travel down the board. (ii) Find the speed of the block as it just leaves the edge of the table. (iii) Determine the horizontal distance from the foot of the table to the point where the block strikes the floor. (iv) State two assumptions made in the above calculations and discuss briefly how relaxing each assumption would affect the horizontal distance obtained.
