Problem

A student claims that a body in free fall should cover equal distances in every one–second interval because its acceleration due to gravity is uniform. Examine this claim by answering the following questions. (i) State the kinematic equation that gives the vertical distance ss fallen in time tt by a body released from rest under gravity. (ii) Using the equation stated in part (i), calculate the total distances fallen after 1 s1\,\text{s}, 2 s2\,\text{s} and 3 s3\,\text{s} (take g=9.8 m/s2g = 9.8\,\text{m/s}^2 and give each answer correct to one decimal place). (iii) From the values obtained in part (ii), explain clearly whether the distances covered in successive one–second intervals are equal or unequal. Give a reason for your conclusion.
