Problem

For a hydrogen atom, the energy of the n=5n=5 level is −0.54 eV-0.54\,\text{eV} and the energy of the ground state is −13.6 eV-13.6\,\text{eV}. One possible relaxation path for an electron starting in the n=5n=5 level is the cascade 5→4→3→2→15\rightarrow4\rightarrow3\rightarrow2\rightarrow1. Calculate the energy (in eV) of each photon emitted in this cascade and verify that the sum of these photon energies equals the energy that would be released in a direct 5→15\rightarrow1 transition.
