Problem

A block of mass mm is pulled along a horizontal surface through a distance ss by a constant force of magnitude FF that makes an angle θ\theta above the horizontal. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the surface is μk\mu_k. The block starts from rest. (i) Obtain expressions for the work done by (a) the pulling force and (b) the force of kinetic friction during the displacement. (ii) Hence write the expression for the net work done on the block in terms of F, θ, μk, mF,\,\theta,\,\mu_k,\,m and ss. (iii) Using an appropriate principle, derive an expression for the speed vv of the block after it has moved the distance ss. (iv) Evaluate the speed for m=5 kg,  F=40 N,  θ=30∘,  μk=0.20m = 5\,\text{kg},\;F = 40\,\text{N},\;\theta = 30^{\circ},\;\mu_k = 0.20 and s=8 ms = 8\,\text{m}. (Take g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\,\text{m s}^{-2}.)
