Problem

Consider a function hh that is continuous on [a,b][a,b] and sampled at nn equally spaced points x0=a, x1, …, xn=bx_0=a,\,x_1,\,\dots,\,x_n=b with common spacing Δx=b−an\Delta x=\dfrac{b-a}{n}. Denote the left-endpoint sum by Ln=∑k=0n−1h(xk) ΔxL_n=\displaystyle\sum_{k=0}^{n-1} h(x_k)\,\Delta x and the right-endpoint sum by Rn=∑k=1nh(xk) ΔxR_n=\displaystyle\sum_{k=1}^{n} h(x_k)\,\Delta x. For each kk, form the quadrilateral bounded by the straight-line segment joining (xk,h(xk))(x_k,h(x_k)) to (xk+1,h(xk+1))(x_{k+1},h(x_{k+1})), the xx-axis, and the vertical lines x=xkx=x_k and x=xk+1x=x_{k+1}. The sum of the areas of all such quadrilaterals is denoted TnT_n. (a) Show algebraically that Tn=Ln+Rn2T_n=\dfrac{L_n+R_n}{2} for every positive integer nn. Provide a clear derivation starting from the definition of TnT_n. (b) Let h(x)=x3h(x)=x^3 on [0,2][0,2]. Using n=4n=4 equally spaced subintervals, compute LnL_n, RnR_n, and TnT_n. (c) Based on the concavity of hh, determine whether TnT_n is an overestimate or an underestimate of ∫02x3 dx\displaystyle\int_{0}^{2}x^3\,dx. Justify completely.
