Problem

Block G (2.0 kg2.0\,\text{kg}) is sandwiched between block H (1.0 kg1.0\,\text{kg}) and a vertical wall, all contact surfaces being vertical. The surfaces between any two solids are rough with a coefficient of static friction μs=0.40\mu_s = 0.40 and coefficient of kinetic friction μk=0.30\mu_k = 0.30. A horizontal force PP is applied to block H, pushing the system toward the wall. No other horizontal forces act. Assume the blocks remain at rest relative to Earth unless the applied force is too small to prevent them from sliding downward. (a) Draw separate free-body diagrams for block G and for block H, clearly labeling all forces. (b) Using the free-body diagrams, write the equilibrium equations for each block in both the horizontal and vertical directions. (c) Derive an expression for the minimum magnitude of the applied force PminP_{\text{min}} that will prevent either block from sliding downward. (d) Calculate PminP_{\text{min}} using the given numerical values.
