Problem

For the reaction 2 SO2(g)+O2(g) ⇌ 2 SO3(g)\mathrm{2\,SO_2(g)+O_2(g)\,\rightleftharpoons\,2\,SO_3(g)}, Kp=1.2K_p=1.2 at 800 K800\,\text{K} and ΔH∘=−198 kJ mol−1\Delta H^{\circ}=-198\,\text{kJ\,mol}^{-1}. A mixture at 800 K800\,\text{K} has PSO2=0.40 atmP_{\mathrm{SO_2}}=0.40\,\text{atm}, PO2=0.20 atmP_{\mathrm{O_2}}=0.20\,\text{atm}, and PSO3=0.10 atmP_{\mathrm{SO_3}}=0.10\,\text{atm}. The temperature is suddenly raised to 900 K900\,\text{K}. Using R=8.314 J mol−1 K−1R=8.314\,\text{J\,mol}^{-1}\,\text{K}^{-1}, calculate KpK_p at 900 K900\,\text{K} and determine whether SO3\mathrm{SO_3} will form or decompose as the system moves toward the new equilibrium.
