Problem

A rectangular solid with cross-sectional area 25 cm225\,\text{cm}^{2} and height 15 cm15\,\text{cm} is held completely immersed, axis vertical, in kerosene of density 800 kg m−3800\,\text{kg m}^{-3}. The top face is 40 cm40\,\text{cm} below the free surface. Take g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\,\text{m s}^{-2}. (i) Calculate the pressure difference between the bottom and top faces of the solid. (ii) Hence find the magnitude of the buoyant force acting on the solid.
