Problem

A cyclist starts from a point O and moves along a straight road as follows: • for the first 4 s4\,\text{s} with a constant velocity of 3 m/s3\,\text{m/s} due east, • for the next 6 s6\,\text{s} with a constant velocity of 5 m/s5\,\text{m/s} due east, • and finally remains at rest for 2 s2\,\text{s}. (a) Draw a velocity–time graph for the entire 12 s12\,\text{s} journey, taking the eastward direction as positive. (b) Using the information represented in the graph, calculate the total displacement of the cyclist from point O at the end of 12 s12\,\text{s}. (c) Determine the average speed and the average velocity of the cyclist for the whole journey.
