Problem

Three blocks—PP, QQ, and RR—each rest on separate horizontal surfaces. For each block, a student has measured and listed all the horizontal forces acting on that block at a particular instant. Positive values indicate forces toward the +x+x direction, and negative values indicate forces toward the −x-x direction. (a) For block PP, the recorded forces are +3 N+3\,\text{N}, +2 N+2\,\text{N}, and −5 N-5\,\text{N}. Calculate the net horizontal force on block PP and state whether it is in translational equilibrium. (b) For block QQ, the recorded forces are +4 N+4\,\text{N}, −1 N-1\,\text{N}, and −3 N-3\,\text{N}. Calculate the net horizontal force on block QQ and state whether it is in translational equilibrium. (c) For block RR, the recorded forces are +6 N+6\,\text{N}, −2 N-2\,\text{N}, and −4 N-4\,\text{N}. Calculate the net horizontal force on block RR and state whether it is in translational equilibrium. (d) Summarize the criteria you used to decide equilibrium vs. nonequilibrium for the three blocks, and briefly explain why any two blocks with identical net forces must undergo the same qualitative change in velocity (if any).
