Problem

Two ideal capacitors with capacitances CA=4.7 μFC_{A}=4.7\,\mu\text{F} and CB=2.2 μFC_{B}=2.2\,\mu\text{F} are connected in series to a 18 V18\,\text{V} battery. After equilibrium is reached, no current flows. (a) Calculate the equivalent capacitance of the series combination. (b) Determine the magnitude of the charge stored on each capacitor. (c) Compute the potential difference across each capacitor. (d) Calculate the energy stored in each capacitor and the total energy supplied by the battery. State whether the total energy equals the sum of the individual energies and briefly discuss your result.
