Problem

An engineer is developing a magnetic sensor that monitors the field produced by a permanent dipole source located along the sensor’s axial line. The sensor reads a field magnitude of B0B_0 when positioned a distance r0r_0 from the dipole’s center. (a) Derive an expression for the sensor reading BB after it is moved to a new distance r=αr0r=\alpha r_0, where α>1\alpha>1 is a dimensionless factor. (b) For α=1.50\alpha = 1.50, compute the ratio B/B0B/B_0. (c) The engineer requires the sensor reading to drop to one-tenth of its initial value. Determine the factor by which the original distance r0r_0 must be multiplied to achieve this reduction. (d) Discuss one practical limitation that could arise if the sensor is moved very far from the dipole in order to obtain extremely low readings.
