A 60 W lamp and a 1000 W room heater are each rated for 240 V.
(i) Calculate the electrical resistance of the lamp and the heater separately.
(ii) If the lamp and the heater are connected in series to a 240 V mains supply, determine the current in the circuit and the potential difference across each appliance. Comment on whether the lamp will glow normally in this arrangement.
(iii) Repeat the calculations of current drawn from the mains when the same lamp and heater are connected in parallel to the 240 V supply. Compare your answers with those obtained in part (ii).
(iv) Using the results obtained, explain why wiring household appliances in series is not adopted in domestic installations.
