Problem
(i) Explain, on the basis of appropriate physical reasoning, why a charged particle with greater kinetic energy describes a circular path of larger radius when it moves perpendicular to a given uniform magnetic field.
(ii) A researcher observes that when the magnetic field in her apparatus is doubled, the radius of the path of a particular ion decreases to half its original value even though the ion has gained some additional kinetic energy during acceleration. Provide a reasoned explanation reconciling these observations.
(iii) If the kinetic energy gained by the ion in part (ii) is actually 20% of its initial value, calculate the percentage change that would have occurred in the radius had the field not been doubled. State clearly the assumptions made, if any.
