Problem

(Comparative Decay Problem) Equal numbers of atoms of two different radioactive isotopes AA and BB are placed in separate but identical detectors at time t=0t=0. The half-life of isotope AA is known to be 12 h12\text{ h}, whereas the half-life of isotope BB is unknown. After 36 h36\text{ h} the activity (rate of decay) of isotope AA is found to be four times the activity of isotope BB. (i) Express the activities of isotopes AA and BB at t=36 ht=36\text{ h} as fractions of their respective initial activities. (ii) Using the result of part (i), form an equation relating the decay constant of isotope BB to that of isotope AA. (iii) Hence calculate the half-life of isotope BB, correct to two significant figures.
