Problem

Car A travels north along a straight road and car B travels east along another straight road that meets the first at right angles at point OO. At noon, car A is 1212 km south of OO and moving northward at 6060 km h−1^{-1}, while car B is 99 km west of OO and moving eastward at 8080 km h−1^{-1}. (i) Let x(t)x(t) km be the northward distance of car A from OO and y(t)y(t) km the eastward distance of car B from OO at time tt hours after noon. Write an expression for the square of the distance D(t)D(t) km between the two cars in terms of xx and yy. (ii) Derive a formula for dDdt\dfrac{dD}{dt} in terms of xx, yy, dxdt\dfrac{dx}{dt} and dydt\dfrac{dy}{dt}. (iii) Calculate dDdt\dfrac{dD}{dt} at 12:15 p.m. (iv) State, with reason, whether the distance between the cars is increasing or decreasing at that moment.
