Problem

An automobile is moving with an initial speed of 20 m s−120\,\text{m s}^{-1} on a level road. The driver applies the brakes and the vehicle comes to rest in a distance of 50 m50\,\text{m}. (i) Calculate the magnitude of the uniform deceleration produced by the brakes. (ii) Determine the time taken by the automobile to come to rest after the brakes are applied. (iii) If after servicing the brakes can provide only half of the deceleration calculated in part (i), what distance will the same automobile require to stop when travelling at the same initial speed?
