Problem

A block of mass 15 kg is suspended from the ceiling by two light inextensible strings. One string is attached to the ceiling and makes an angle of 30° with the vertical on the left side of the block, while the other makes an angle of 45° with the vertical on the right side. (i) Draw the free-body diagram of the block and clearly mark all forces. (ii) Taking the upward vertical and rightward horizontal directions as positive, write the equilibrium conditions along the two axes. (iii) Solve the simultaneous equations obtained in part (ii) to find the tension in each string. (iv) Verify that the vector sum of the two tension forces is equal and opposite to the weight of the block.
