Problem

Two separate lengths of copper wire are connected, one at a time, to the same 12 V12\,\text V dc power supply of negligible internal resistance. Wire A has resistance 2.0 Ω2.0\,\Omega and wire B has resistance 0.50 Ω0.50\,\Omega. (i) Calculate the current through each wire when connected to the supply. (ii) Find the ratio of the currents IA:IBI_{\text A}:I_{\text B}. (iii) Determine the power dissipated as heat in each wire. (iv) Which wire will become hotter in use? Justify your answer on the basis of the calculations in parts (i) and (iii).
