Problem
(a) Define the apparent coefficient of volumetric expansion and the real coefficient of volumetric expansion for a liquid contained in a glass vessel.
(b) A liquid–in–glass thermometer is often marked with a linear scale although both the liquid and the glass expand with temperature. Explain, without numerical calculation, the physical assumptions that justify taking the scale to be linear between the two fixed points.
(c) Describe qualitatively how the thickness and the material of the glass bulb influence the accuracy of such a thermometer at very high temperatures.
