Problem

Two point charges are placed in vacuum on a straight line 10\,cm apart. One charge is +2 μC+2\,\mu\text{C} and the other is −3 μC-3\,\mu\text{C}. (i) Define electric potential at a point in an electric field and state its SI unit. (ii) State, with reason, whether electric potential is a scalar or a vector quantity. (iii) Calculate the electric potential at the midpoint of the line joining the two charges. Take k=9×109 N m2C−2k = 9\times10^{9}\,\text{N m}^2\text{C}^{-2}. (iv) If the magnitudes of both charges are doubled while their separation remains the same, how will the answer obtained in part (iii) change? Give a brief justification.
