Problem

A 1.5 kg1.5\,\text{kg} block is moving at 4.0 m s−14.0\,\text{m\,s}^{-1} on a horizontal table where the coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.250.25. After travelling 0.60 m0.60\,\text{m} it strikes a horizontal spring of force constant 250 N m−1250\,\text{N\,m}^{-1} fixed to a wall. The same coefficient of friction acts during the subsequent compression of the spring. (i) Calculate the work done against friction before the block first touches the spring. (ii) Hence determine the maximum compression of the spring.
