Problem

Two vertical poles PP and QQ are 20 m20\,\text{m} apart and at the same height. A tightrope is stretched between their tops. When a performer of mass 60 kg60\,\text{kg} stands exactly midway between the poles, the rope sags so that each half of the rope makes an angle of 15∘15^{\circ} with the horizontal. (a) Draw the free-body diagram of the performer standing on the rope. (b) Resolve the forces acting on the performer into horizontal and vertical components and write the corresponding equilibrium equations. (c) Calculate the tension in each half of the rope. (d) Hence determine the magnitude of the horizontal force exerted by the rope on each pole.
