Problem

An aeroplane maintains an airspeed of 250 km h−1250\,\text{km h}^{-1} toward true north while a steady wind of 60 km h−160\,\text{km h}^{-1} blows from the west. (a) Determine the velocity of the aeroplane with respect to the ground, giving both magnitude and direction with respect to true north. (b) How far north and how far east of its starting point will the aeroplane be after 30 min30\,\text{min} of flight under these conditions? (c) If instead the pilot wishes to fly exactly due north relative to the ground, at what angle with respect to true north should the aircraft be headed?
